Human-Centered Design

In addition to being a general graphic designer, I specialize in Human-Centered Design, or HCD. Human-Centered Design is an accessible process that can help you create innovative resources that center the communities that you serve in your work. If you have a project or an idea you'd like to bring an HCD approach to, reach out for a free consultation on my contact page. I'd love to chat with you about it!

Ask Every Student

In 2019, I was contracted to apply a human-centered design approach to a research project called the National Resource Consortium for Full Student Voter Participation. Through a collaborative human-centered design process, I developed a framework that any higher educational institution could use to achieve full student voter participation on their campus.

In 2020, I was hired full time at the SLSV Coalition where I created and led two cycles of "Codesigner Cohorts" to collaboratively design over 30 resources with student, faculty, and campus staff participants between 2020-2022. These resources are compiled in the publicly accessible Ask Every Student Toolkit. Through the resources provided in the Toolkit, local leaders can literally "ask every student" on their campus to participate in the democratic process.

You can read more about the impact of the Ask Every Student initiative in a Forbes article I wrote in October 2020 titled "What Would It Take To Ask Every Student On Campus About Participating In Our Democracy? Local Leaders Are On It."

In this video, I provide an overview of the Ask Every Student Toolkit and explain to users how they can best utilize the provided resources.

Votes & Ballots

In 2018, I was hired by Democracy Works as a student designer to work on designing Votes & Ballots, a suite of interactive team-wide strategic activities that take the guesswork out of writing action plans for on-campus democratic engagement. In 2021, I led the process for iterating the activity to be optimized for virtual contexts, as well.

Through human-centered design, our design team created a fun, interactive activity to gamify the action planning process based on the Strengthening American Democracy Guide.

This activity has been used by hundreds of students, faculty, and campus staff + admin at summits, campus coalition meetings, and other contexts where campus leaders want to get started on an action plan for student voter engagement!

Human-Centered Design Training

While working at the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, I developed a Human-Centered Design (HCD) training tailored to students, faculty, campus staff, and nonprofit professionals working in the nonpartisan college student voting space. As a freelancer, I now offer trainings custom-tailored to clients' organizational contexts and goals. Below is the slide deck I designed for a recent client, Vot-ER. I also offer additional custom templates and worksheets, interactive sessions, 1-on-1 HCD consultations for staff members, and higher level, long-term HCD consultation for directors as part of these training packages.
